“Illumination”
Concepts–Roles–Models
A series of lectures starting on October 18th will attempt a comparative examination of the idea of ‘enlightenment’ and related terms and concepts, as well as associated models and roles in various cultures and literatures. By exploring the possibilities and limitations of this comparison, it is hoped to achieve an overview both of the range of tenets and perceptions associated with the term in Europe and of analogous or comparable concepts in Asia. Theories and teachings as attested in Classical texts, European mystical traditions and modern reception will be explored, as well as religious and philosophical concepts from Asian traditions. Scholars from a range of disciplines including religious studies, theology, philosophy, Jewish studies, Arabic studies, Iranian studies and East Asian studies will be taking part.
